The Library

The whole imprint as a single table: twenty-six volumes of the economic primitive, in six families, descending from the surface of exchange to its substrate. The Wage, the price of labor, is № I — the one so far in progress. Choose an element to open its volume.

The map of the imprint, made navigable. Each cell is a volume; each volume an elemental quantity of economic life, to be exhausted in a dozen plates as The Wage exhausts the price of labor. The six families descend from the most concrete — the prices one actually pays — through the quantities they move, the ways they fail, the institutions built to hold them, and the aggregates they sum to, down to the human conduct that underwrites the whole. The arrangement is a claim: that these are the irreducible elements, that they combine, and that each deserves the same treatment — the rigor of the seminar and the grace of the essay, honest to the edge of what can be known. The table is notional; one plate of one volume is so far set in type. Open it from The Wage. Set in Fraunces and Newsreader, after the plates.
