Every ordinary price — the wage, the rent, the rate — is a verdict on a hidden contest, commonly mistaken for a fact of nature. These are the elements: twenty-six primitives of economic life, each the subject of a volume, each to be turned inside out with the rigor of the seminar and the grace of the essay. The work is to fix a numéraire of honesty against which the verdicts can finally be read. Twenty-three volumes are now in print, and four of the table's six families are complete — the failures, the institutions, the quantities, and the prices. Each family is represented at least twice: The Wage, The Rent, and The Rate, three of the prices; The Margin, The Surplus, The Utility, and The Stock, all four quantities; The Power, The Externality, The Commons, and The Asymmetry, all four failures; The Firm, The Contract, The Money, The Tax, and The Rule, all five institutions; The Cycle and The Growth, the two aggregates; and The Choice, The Game, and The Norm, three of the behaviors.
