The Cases

the table at work

the table has been an object to examine; here it becomes a method — nine real questions, each refused its easy answer and taken apart into the contests beneath

Why it is applied A table of elements is not only a museum of types; it is an instrument, and the test of an instrument is what it can take apart. Every economic question carries an easy answer that names one cause. The easy answer is a simplification, and the simplification serves someone. Here the table does the only thing it is finally for: it explains the world by taking it apart.

The Table at Work

For twelve companions the table has been an object to be examined — arranged, connected, weighed, combined, dated, measured, and argued over. It has not yet been put to work. But a table of elements is not only a museum of types; it is an instrument, and the test of an instrument is what it can take apart. Every economic phenomenon that puzzles or angers us — the rent we cannot afford, the crisis that erased a decade, the planet quietly warming — arrives wrapped in an easy answer that names a single cause: greed, scarcity, weak will, bad luck. The easy answer is almost always a simplification, and the simplification almost always serves someone.

This companion takes nine such questions and does to each what the whole book has urged: it refuses the single cause and asks which contests are really at work. The result, every time, is that the phenomenon dissolves into several elements at once — the high rent is scarcity and law and finance and credit together; the crisis is hidden quality and cheap money and herd psychology and unfaceable banks; the warming planet is an unpriced harm and an unowned sky and a trap of strategy with no referee. No single element explains any of them. That is not a failure of the analysis. It is the finding.

Each case names the elements it draws on as a short formula of their symbols, the way a compound is written from its atoms — for a real phenomenon is a compound of economic elements, and reading the formula is the first step of the dissection. The same few elements recur from case to case, because a handful of contests — power, asymmetry, the unpriced, the rules — are the load-bearing structure of economic life. Click any symbol to light up every case it appears in. What follows is the table doing the one thing a table of elements is finally for: explaining the world by taking it apart.

The nine questions

Click an element symbol in any formula to trace that contest across the cases.

Case — Housing

Why is housing so expensive?

The easy answer“Because there are too many people and not enough houses.”

What is really at work
Rn
Rent

Land in a wanted place is fixed in supply, so its price is pure scarcity — a payment for position that no effort created.

Ru
Rule

Zoning, permits, and height limits cap how much can be built, turning a natural scarcity into a legal one; much of the price is the cost of the rules.

Sk
Stock

A house is no longer only a place to live but an asset to hold, and its price is bid up by those treating shelter as a store of wealth.

Rt
Rate

When borrowing is cheap, buyers can bid more, and the price of a house comes to track the price of the mortgage as much as the building.

Ex
Externality

A good school, a quiet street, a neighbor’s view — unpriced effects that the market quietly capitalizes into the price of the deed.

The readingHousing is dear not for one reason but because scarcity, law, finance, credit, and the unpriced all press on the same price at once — and each points to a different culprit.

Case — 2008

Why did the 2008 financial crisis happen?

The easy answer“Because greedy bankers made reckless bets.”

What is really at work
As
Asymmetry

Mortgage-backed securities buried bad loans inside good ones, so buyers could not see what they held — a market for lemons at planetary scale.

Rt
Rate

Years of cheap credit pushed investors to reach for yield and households to borrow far past what they could repay.

Sk
Stock

Houses were treated as an asset that only rose, and for a while the belief made itself true — a bubble.

Bi
Bias

Everyone extrapolated the boom, discounted the tail risk, and followed the crowd, because the crowd was making money.

Fm
Firm

The firms that packaged and sold the risk were too large and too entangled to be let fail, so they took risks the rest of us underwrote.

The readingThe crisis was not one sin but a chain — hidden quality, cheap money, a bubble, herd psychology, and unfaceable institutions — each link forged by a different element.

Case — Climate

Why is the planet warming if almost no one wants it to?

The easy answer“Because people and corporations are selfish.”

What is really at work
Ex
Externality

Every ton of carbon imposes a cost on everyone and a bill on no one; the harm is real and sits entirely outside the price of the fuel.

Cm
Commons

The atmosphere belongs to all and so to none, and what no one owns is what everyone overuses.

Gm
Game

No nation will bear the cost alone while others free-ride on its restraint, so all wait, and the worst outcome is reached by each acting sensibly.

Ru
Rule

There is no global authority to price the carbon or enforce the limit, so the one fix the economics points to has no hand to impose it.

Rt
Rate

How much we will spend now to spare the future turns on a discount rate — a single figure that decides whether catastrophe is urgent or ignorable.

The readingWarming is not a failure of wanting but of structure: an unpriced harm, an unowned sky, a trap of strategy, and no rule-maker above the players — selfishness is barely needed.

Case — Care and finance

Why do nurses earn less than bankers?

The easy answer“Because bankers are worth more.”

What is really at work
Wg
Wage

A wage is set not by the worth of the work but by what the worker can command at the table — and care has weak leverage where finance has strong.

Pw
Power

Hospitals are often the only large employer of nurses in a region, and a single buyer of labor can hold the wage below what the work adds.

Nm
Norm

Work coded as women’s, and as a calling, is paid as if virtue were part of the wage — a valuation older than any market.

Sh
Share

Finance sits close to the flow of capital and captures a large slice of it; care sits far from it and captures little, whatever the value created.

The readingThe gap measures bargaining power, market structure, and inherited valuation far more than it measures a life saved against a trade booked.

Case — Rich and poor

Why are some nations rich and others poor?

The easy answer“Because of geography, or resources, or culture.”

What is really at work
Gr
Growth

Wealth compounds; a small edge in the rate of growth, held for a century, becomes the gulf between a rich nation and a poor one.

Ru
Rule

Secure property, enforced contracts, the rule of law — institutions decide whether effort is rewarded or seized, and are the deepest cause economists have found.

Pw
Power

Institutions that concentrate power extract rather than build; those that disperse it invite the many to invest, and the difference becomes destiny.

Sk
Stock

Rich nations have accumulated the capital — machines, roads, schooling — that makes each hour of labor produce more, and poverty is partly just its absence.

The readingProsperity turns less on what a nation has than on the rules under which it holds it — growth, institutions, power, and accumulated capital, not fate.

Case — Medicine

Why does lifesaving medicine cost so much?

The easy answer“Because the research is expensive.”

What is really at work
Pw
Power

A patent grants a temporary monopoly, and a monopolist with a drug you need to live can set very nearly any price.

As
Asymmetry

The patient cannot judge the medicine, the doctor prescribes it, the insurer pays for it — the one who chooses, the one who uses, and the one who pays are three different parties.

Ru
Rule

The length of the patent, what may be advertised, what the regulator demands — the market is built by law at every turn, and the price is built with it.

Pm
Premium

Insurance dulls the buyer’s resistance, since someone else pays at the counter, and a demand that does not flinch invites a higher charge.

The readingThe price reflects monopoly, a three-way split between chooser and user and payer, and a market designed by rule — far more than the cost of the chemistry.

Case — Phones

Why is everyone glued to their phone?

The easy answer“Because people have no willpower.”

What is really at work
Bi
Bias

The feeds are engineered against known weaknesses — variable rewards, loss aversion, the pull of the new — the laboratory’s findings turned into a business model.

Ex
Externality

Your captured attention is a cost borne by your work, your sleep, your table — none of it priced into the free app.

Pw
Power

A few platforms hold the attention of billions, and that concentration lets them set the terms for everyone who would reach an audience.

Nm
Norm

You are there because everyone is there; the network’s value, and its grip, rises with each person who cannot afford to leave.

Gm
Game

To put the phone down while rivals, peers, and children do not is to fall behind, so each stays engaged though most would prefer a world where none did.

The readingThe compulsion is not weak character but a built environment — exploited bias, unpriced cost, platform power, social lock-in, and a trap no one can leave alone.

Case — Inequality

Why do the rich keep getting richer?

The easy answer“Because they work harder.”

What is really at work
Sk
Stock

Wealth already held earns a return without labor, so those who start with capital pull steadily away from those who have only their wages.

Rt
Rate

When the return on capital outruns the growth of wages and the economy, the gap between owners and earners widens by arithmetic alone.

Rn
Rent

Much of great wealth is return to position — land, patents, a dominant firm, a name — income the asset throws off without being used up.

Sh
Share

As capital’s slice of the national income grows and labor’s shrinks, the division itself tilts toward those who own over those who work.

The readingConcentration is built into the machinery — capital compounds, returns outrun wages, position pays, the shares tilt — long before anyone’s effort enters the account.

Case — Inflation

Why did prices surge after the pandemic?

The easy answer“Because the government printed too much money.”

What is really at work
Mo
Money

A vast expansion of money and credit met an economy that could not, for a time, produce more — more claims chasing the same goods.

Cy
Cycle

Demand snapped back faster than supply could recover, and shortage did the rest; it was a shock to both blades of the scissors at once.

Sp
Spread

Tangled supply chains and the soaring cost of moving goods widened the gap between what producers charged and what shoppers paid.

Pw
Power

Where a few firms dominate, a moment of general inflation is cover to raise prices further than cost alone requires — a contested but real part of the story.

Wg
Wage

Workers, watching prices rise, pressed for higher pay, and higher pay fed back into prices — the spiral the measure both tracks and fuels.

The readingThe surge had several engines — money, a demand-and-supply shock, broken logistics, pricing power, and the wage-price loop — and which one you blame is itself a politics.

What the cases share

Never One Thing

One lesson runs through all nine, and it is the whole book in miniature: the phenomenon is never one thing. The single cause the easy answer names — the greedy banker, the lazy user, the worthier banker, the printing press — is always present, and always insufficient, and the work of understanding is to see the other contests it conceals. A complex economic outcome is a compound, and like any compound it has the properties of none of its elements alone.

Notice which elements did the most work. Across the cases it was the same few that surfaced again and again — power, asymmetry, the externality, the rule — the contests gathered in the book’s third group and fourth, the failures and the institutions. These are the load-bearing members of economic life, the elements into which the hardest questions keep resolving; the prices and the quantities are where economics begins, but the failures and the institutions are where it earns its keep. A reader who learned to look first for the hidden power, the hidden information, the uncounted cost, and the designing rule would hold a working method for almost any economic question that ever troubled them.

And yet the dissections are not the last word, because the weighting is contestable. How much of the high rent is scarcity and how much is law; how much of the inflation was money and how much was power — these are the very questions economists fight over, and naming the elements does not settle their shares. That is by design. The table tells you which contests to look for; it does not tell you who should win them. To take a phenomenon apart into its elements is to replace one argument, about a single cause, with a better argument, about how several causes combine — which is the most the book has ever claimed to offer.

It is the thesis reached from the far side. The book began by saying that every price is a verdict on a hidden contest. The cases show the converse: that every real question, taken apart, reveals the contests the verdict hid — and that there is always more than one. The argument — over which contests matter most, and how they combine — remains open.

Return to the atlas for the elements themselves, the compounds for the pairs at the root of these formulae, the constellation for the web they form, the properties to weigh them by trait, the diagonals to read one across the table, the measures for the numbers they hide in, the objections to hear the case against the book, the chronology for the order they were found, the laboratory to set the models moving, the preface for the argument entire, the guided tour for a path through it, the index to find any element by name, the priceless for where the table ends, the gaps for what it leaves off the table, the first person for how the contests are lived, the schools for the table read by rival eyes, the sources for the works beneath the table, or the unsettled for the questions still open. The questions are the world’s; the elements are the book’s.
